About this Job
The Chief Pilot (CP) shall hold an ATPL and be a Pilot-in-Command holding appropriate rating on the applicable aeroplane type.
Before being appointed he shall:
- Prove thorough knowledge of regulations, requirements and operational procedures on the applicable aeroplane type;
- Be accepted for this position by the SSCA.
He reports to the Director Flight Operations. Apart from flying duties he should generally commit at least 1 duty day per week to office duties.
His function, main duties and responsibilities are to:
- Supervise the flight operations of his fleet;
- Manage, supervise and release flight crew roster for his fleet;
- Achieve set goals and objectives needed to elevate productivity and enhance performance in the area of fleet management;
- Closely cooperate with the Director Flight Operations, Director of Training, and all relevant departments in standardising and optimising standards and procedures;
- Establish fleet-specific procedures and regulations; where necessary, in cooperation with the Ground Operations Department;
- Establish fleet-specific requirements and standards that flight crews have to meet;
- Cooperate with Director of Training in establishing check and training syllabi and procedures;
- Conduct regular inspection flights, to check the professional standard and development of his personnel;
- Request additional flight crew training if necessary;
- Ensure, in cooperation with Director of Training, that training and checking of his personnel are being conducted in due time;
- Ensure the exchange of information and experience within his fleet and with interfacing departments;
- Discuss fleet-relevant maintenance subjects and problems with the Continuing Airworthiness Manager and Fleet Technical Pilot in order to ensure the airworthiness of his fleet;
- Ensure that the equipment of the aeroplanes in his fleet meets the requirements for the planned type of operation;
- Process occurrence reports, addressed to him by Flight Safety Officer and other reports;
- Investigate irregularities and to recommend remedial action;
- Enforce Flight and Duty Time Limitations and Rest Requirements, as defined in OM Part A Chapter 7, while authorizing flight crew plan (roster);
- Hold final authority over flight crew planning issues within his fleet;
- Pass on to the Director Flight Operations all important information;
- Request the Director Flight Operations to call a hearing, when such action seems appropriate, and to cooperate in the resulting investigation;
- Participate in regular assessments of the safety of the aeroplane’s interior installations (flight deck and cabin);
- Hold editorial responsibility for the OM Part B;
- Periodically control the on-board flight documents;
- Process pilot reports addressed to his fleet;
- Instruct Crew Planning and Operational Centre regarding flight crew pairing;
- Select the personnel in cooperation with the Director Flight Operations to perform special duties;
- Plan and manage a leave roster for pilots within his fleet;
- Ensure as much as possible equal distribution of flight parameters that influence quality of life or remuneration (e.g. night flying, number of sectors, etc.) among pilots within his fleet;
- Pre-plan (by analysing present and future operations) the numbers of flight crew required on his fleet and provide such data to the Director Flight Operations and Accountable Manager in due time;
- Properly manage all expenditures associated with the area of responsibility.
Before being appointed he shall:
- Select Technical Pilot, respecting the veto-right of the Director Flight Operations;
- Suspend subordinates from their duties, functions and rights where this seems necessary due to safety, productivity and/or disciplinary issues;
- Prohibit flights or series of flights for safety reasons.
